Think Before You Vape: Dr. Elizabeth Johnson Talks Health Risks with Shani Sweets | Health & Hip Hop

Apr 20, 2026 | Health & Hip Hop

In this episode of Health & Hip Hop, Shani Sweets from Hot 97.9 sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, Certified Pediatrician at Advance Community Health, for an honest conversation about the harmful effects of vaping. From lung health to addiction and long-term risks, Dr. Johnson breaks down why vaping is far from harmless, especially for teens and young adults.

Common Misconceptions About Vaping

One of the biggest misconceptions about vaping is that it only contains nicotine. Dr. Johnson explained that vape liquids can also include THC, flavor chemicals, and other substances that are often unregulated. Many vape products are not closely monitored, and users may not fully know what they are inhaling into their bodies.

What Vaping Does to Your Lungs

Dr. Johnson emphasized that heating vape liquid releases toxic chemicals that can seriously harm the lungs.

“Heating the liquid releases toxic products like formaldehyde and pesticides, which are harmful to the lungs,” she said.

These toxic substances create tiny particle deposits in the lungs that can lead to inflammation and long-term respiratory issues. While some people believe vaping is a safer alternative to cigarettes, Dr. Johnson made it clear that vaping still poses major health risks.

Understanding Nicotine Addiction

Another major concern discussed during the interview was nicotine addiction and how quickly vaping can create dependency.

“The thing about vape pens is that it’s delivering nicotine into your brain very effectively. You inhale, it’s quickly absorbed, nicotine gets right to your brain, and it releases dopamine, that feel-good chemical.” Dr. Johnson said.

Dr. Johnson explained that over time, the brain begins to rely on nicotine just to feel normal, creating a dangerous cycle of addiction.

“Sometimes you can ask somebody who’s like, ‘I don’t want to be doing this, but I feel like I have to just to feel like myself,’” she shared. “That’s how people become addicted.”

Warning Signs in Teens

Dr. Johnson also discussed early warning signs parents and caregivers should pay attention to in teens who may be vaping. Changes in mood, irritability, trouble concentrating, and shifts in behavior can all be indicators that nicotine addiction may be developing.

She stressed the importance of open conversations, support, and individualized plans for quitting rather than judgment or punishment.

Support for Quitting Vaping

Quitting vaping can be difficult, but support is available. Dr. Johnson encouraged individuals struggling with vaping addiction to seek help through therapy, counseling, and healthcare providers who can address underlying stressors and mental health concerns.

At Advance Community Health, patients have access to resources and support systems designed to help individuals quit vaping and improve their overall health.
