In Episode 3 of It’s Giving Health, our host Donnae Wards sits down with Primary Care Provider, Kerry Mackey to unpack the culture norms and the impact that masculinity has on men’s physical and mental health. We dive into how the healthcare system can better support men’s whole person’s health.
In recognition to Men’s Health Awareness Month, this episode shines light on the silent battles many men face and how to break the stigma.
Breaking the Stigma of Traditional Norms
Throughout the episode, Kerry Mackey discusses the generational shifts and how younger men are beginning to challenge the traditional norms that the older generation often upheld. From early childhood, boys are told to “man up” or that “men don’t cry”, which can translate to vulnerability being a threat to their identity. Although apart of society today, the younger generation of men are starting to break the stigma and address their issues. By normalizing the saying “It okay to not be okay” allows this generation to lean away from the stoic approach of vulnerability.
“Society has helped younger people lean into being more in tune with their mental health or speaking up opposed to the older generation.” Said Mackey. “It is cool and it’s okay to say, ‘hey I’m not doing okay right now’ whereas back in the day if you went and told someone ‘I’m not doing okay’ they tell you to get your stuff together”.
Why Preventative Care Should Be a Priority
Mackey highlights the significance of early detection and how many conditions are common and treatable when caught in the early stages. Unfortunately, many men delay care due to fear, stigma, or a belief that symptoms will resolve on their own. The phrase “preventive care is better than the cure” emphasizes the importance of prioritizing your health to avoid serious illnesses and long-term complications, rather than waiting to address issues after they have occurred.
“Numerous things that happen all because you know an issue is present or prevalent is not being addressed and being avoided and I wish people knew that it’s something that needs to be talked about,” said Mackey.
