Shorus Minella dives deep into healthy dieting with Hot 97.9 Shani Sweets on Health & Hip Hop

Feb 4, 2026 | Health & Hip Hop

In this episode of Health & Hip Hop, Hot 97.9’s very own Shani Sweets sits down with Shorus Minella, Registered Dietitian at Advance Community Health, for a discussion on healthy dieting, the do’s and don’ts when trying to eat better!

Together, they dive into the essentials of building a balanced diet that is low in sodium and sugar while boosting fiber and plant-based foods. Minella breaks down why nutrition matters, how it impacts everything from your energy levels to your heart health, and shares practical tips for cutting down on salt without losing flavor.

Get the Benefits of Fiber Without the Side Effects

One standout moment from the conversation came when Minella explained how to increase fiber intake the right way without dealing with gas, bloating, or cramping.

“Fiber is really beneficial for heart health. It helps to lower cholesterol and supports your GI system,” Minella shared. “Food high in fiber include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, but when we try to add too much too fast, that’s when those symptoms can happen.”

Minella recommends starting slow by adding veggies at dinner time and increasing your water intake. These steps will reduce bloating and have positive impacts on long-term health, metabolism, and healthy behaviors.

Adapting to Changes in your Diet

In the interview, they also touched on how your taste buds can adjust when you make healthier food choices. Sweets mentioned that “once you really start getting into a plant-based diet, your taste buds will adjust to having less salt in your food.” Minella agreed and stated that “It takes about 30 days for anything to become a habit. So, if you give yourself time with plant-based and low-sodium eating, your taste buds will adjust.”

From realistic steps to expert insight, this episode is full of tips to help you make small changes that lead to big results.
